2012 Recap: Races and Milestones

Until I started pulling numbers for this recap I did not realized I had raced so much in 2012. With a total of 24 races, that's 2 more than I have ever raced in one year (2010). Unlike 2011, which was the year of speed, 2012 was about building endurance and dipping my toe in the ultramarathon pool. Even without a focus on speed, I managed to PR at 6 disstances at the beginning of the year when I was still reaping the benefits of the speed work in 2011. I think 2013 will be about finding a balance between speed and distance, but I'm still working on drafting those goals, so stay tuned.

Totals:
  • walked 600 miles
  • ran 1141 miles
  • biked 468 miles
  • total run + walk: 1741 miles
  • total (all 3): 2,206 miles
Firsts:
  • RRCA Certified Running Coach
  • Moved to San Francisco
  • 50 Mile Ultra
  • 6 Hour Timed Race
  • Raced on back-to-back days
  • Marathon Maniac
6 New PRs:
  1. marathon = 4:52:17 (29:12)
  2. half marathon = 2:18:03 (5:57)
  3. 12K = 1:21:58 (7:15)
  4. 10K = 1:03:28 (2:52)
  5. 5K = 29:23 (1:03)
  6. magic mile = 8:10 (7s)
24 races:

Ten more races than last year, and 2 more than previous record in 2010. Breakdown per distance: 5 5Ks, 2 10Ks, 1 12K, 1 15K, 9 Half Marathons, 4 Marathons, 1 50M, 1 6H

2011 Recap: Races and Milestones

2011 was a great year. I think I've said enough about it, so I'll just let the numbers speak for themselves.

  • walked 430 miles
  • ran 922 miles
  • biked 884 miles
  • yoga: 134 sessions; 47 hours
  • total: 2,239 miles; 451 hours
Firsts:
  • 2 20+ long runs in the pouring rain
  • 31 mile long run
  • ran 100+ miles in a month (x2)
  • hot air balloon ride
  • sailing
  • corn maze
  • Galloway running school
  • became Cycling Savvy instructor / taught first class
  • visited Italy
10 New PRs:
  1. 1 mile = 8:58 (6s)
  2. 1 mile = 8:25 (33s)
  3. 2 miler = 18:04 (2:55)
  4. 5K = 30:26 (1:44)
  5. 5 miler = 52:06 (2:53)
  6. 10K = 1:06:50 (1:45)
  7. 10K = 1:06:20 (30s)
  8. 15K = 1:42:48 (7:02)
  9. Half Marathon = 2:24:00 (4:16)
  10. Duathlon
14 Races:

2011 Recap: Goals Update

Run/walk 1100 miles (run 700) - Yup! I ran 922 miles and walked 430 miles for a total of 1352 miles!

Bike 2000 miles - I focused more on my running this year, so I only biked 884 miles. That's nearly half of what I biked last year, but my true love is running so that's ok with me. I plan to bike a little bit more in 2012.

Run a 5K in 31 minutes (or PR) - Yup! New PR is 30:26. I think 2012 may finally be the year for the sub-30 5K :)

Run 2nd Marathon - It wasn't pretty, but I did it! :)

Complete an olympic distance duathlon - I did a sprint instead. Maybe in 2012, but I want to focus more on my running again so we'll see.

Use car less than 4000 miles - This was a very aggressive goal and we did not quite meet it, but we drove the car 2,844 less than last year: 7,713 in 2011 vs 10,557 in 2010. This is actually really amazing when you consider that in 2010 we lived without a car for 4 months, so we made more efficient use of the car last year. When you average the miles per month, we drove 1,320/month over the 8 months when we had a car in 2010 vs 643/month over 12 months in 2011. That's less than half per month, so I'm really pleased with that.

Restaurant food budget = $50/mo; $12/wk - Total Fail. My monthly average was over 2x that. I really want to cut down on our restaurant spending in 2012.

Cook 90% of my meals (restaurant meals = 9/mo; 2/wk) - I stopped keeping track, but we've been cooking a lot of our meals. I have 126 restaurant transactions in Mint, so that averages out to 10.5/mo or 2.4/wk so that's not bad. I know there were a few more outings that I did not pay for and thus don't have on my tally, but I don't think my average was more than 11/mo.

Complete 40 items from 101 Thing list (for a total of 75) - I haven't paid too much attention to this lately and have only completed 43 items total so far. I got a lot of catching up to do in the next 9 months.

Read 12 books - Nope. I don't think I read a single book in 2011 :-/

2010 Recap: Goals

Goal Status
Complete at least 30 items from my 101 things in 1001 days list. Yes! I've completed 35 items so far, and have others in progress. I changed my approach to this a bit from the original plan, but it is still serving it's purpose well. I'll go into more details in a separate post.
Complete my first marathon! Yes! Read the race report. It was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to do it again. I applied for the NYC marathon lottery again, and if I do not get in I hope to run the Space Coast Marathon in November.
Complete my first olympic triathlon No. I only did one sprint triathlon, and it didn't go so well. I decided to focus on running instead. I may try an olympic distance duathlon  instead.
Complete the Tri 2010 dailymile challenge - run/bike/swin at least a total of 2010 miles in tri proportions: swim 60, bike 1568, run/walk 382 Yes and No. I covered a total of 2572 miles, but not in those proportions. My swimming was practically non-existant, but the biking and running more than made up for it. I'll post full distance/time stats and graphs for all sports in a separate post when Dailymile publishes the annual reports.
Do a long run of at least 6-10 miles/week (total of 12 - 18 miles per week) Yes, for the most part. I am sure there were a few weeks when I did not, due to injury or some other conflict, but I kept up with running pretty regularly throughout the year.
Run/walk 700 miles (58/month; 14/week) Yes! I ran 686 miles and walked 326 miles for a total of 1,012 miles.
Bike 1750 miles (146/month; 34/week) No, but 1552 miles is still an improvement over the 1487 miles in 2009.
Swim 1 mile non-stop No, I stopped swimming after the triathlon break up. I'll attempt this again someday, but not anytime soon.
Exercise 365 hours (1 hour/day) Yes! 439 hours (37/mo; 8.4/wk; 1.2/day)
Run a 5K in under 30 minutes (or PR) Yes! New PR is 32:10, and improvement of 1:02
Run a 10K without walking Yes! My longest non-stop run was 7.5 miles.
Run a 1/2 marathon in under 2:35 (or PR) Yes and Yes! :) I PR and ran 2 under 2:35.
Maintain my weight at under 125 lbs Kinda. My weight fluctuates between 125-130, and I'm ok with that.

2010 Recap: Races and Milestones

2010 was a great year filled with new experiences and new PRs :) I had some setbacks, but when I looked back on the whole year I realized how minor they were. The setbacks pale in comparison to everything that I managed to accomplish, including running my first marathon! :) I ran 686 miles, which is 130 miles more than last year, and completed 22 races with 6 new PRs! 2009 Recap

2009 was a great year of fitness for me, and I had a lot of first. I logged a total of 2141.93 miles (combined total from biking, cycling, swimming, and walking), and a combined total of 315 hours and 36 minutes of exercise. I'm sure I exercised more than that because I was not logging time on some core and strength workouts until recently. Below are more stats and even graphs!

Running Stats: 556.29 miles; 116 hours, 43 minutes.

June through August was when I was training for triathlons, and my running slowed. But it picked back up in great force in September when I began training for the marathon. I hope to do a much better job of keeping up with my running during tri season this time and hope to do a long run of 6-10 miles each week. If I can manage that, I should easily be able to run 600-800 miles in 2010.

Cycling Stats: 1486.95 miles; 117 hours, 36 minutes

As expected, cycling peaked in June - August during tri season and then tapered as I trained for the marathon and made running the priority. Now that we have a bike trainer, I hope to start riding more and re-building my base in time for tri season.

Swimming Stats: 14.66 miles; 15 hours, 36 minutes

This is my weakest sport, and it shows. The chart is so pathetic that I'm not even posting it. I haven't swam since September, and probably won't again until March. I'll probably have to start from scratch somewhat with endurance, improve my technique, and re-acclimate myself to not fearing the lake.

            2008 in Review & 2009 Goals

I realize that I am 2 months late for this, but I just never got around to it before now because 1) I was on vacation; 2) I was training for my 2nd half marathon; 3) I was recovering from my 2nd half marathon. So without further ado, here is a quick review of my first year of running and my plans for the 2nd.

I have not registered for many races yet as I like to complete one race before registering for the next, but here are some of the ones I'm considering so far. I'm still in search of my first marathon this fall somewhere in Florida (not Disney), so if you have suggestions feel free to post them in the comments.
