Week 13 Recap

This has been a very busy week and I think I may have over done it a bit, so today is a complete day off. I managed to sleep in until 9:30 am! I tried to do some yoga, but quit after 10 minutes. My body just wanted to be, so I let it be :)

March 2010 Recap

Marathon recovery is going great, but you wouldn't know I just ran a marathon with the level of exercise I've been doing this past month. I started swimming 3 times a week and biking to work 2 times a week (soon to be 3), and that is on top of running 3-4 times a week, including long runs of 6-14 miles every Saturday. I've been neglecting yoga, core, and upper body strength though, so I need to juggle things around in April to fit those in.

March Stats
  • run / walk = 86 miles = 17 walk + 69 run; longest run 11 miles
  • bike = 135 miles; longest ride 14.5 miles
  • swim = 5 miles / 8100 yards
  • total = 225 miles in 40h 25m (avg 1.3 hrs / day)
2010 Goals Progress

The year is 25% over, so anything around that percentage means I'm on track to meet that yearly goal. In some cases (e.g. swimming and biking), I know the totals are low during winter months but they will increase drastically during spring and summer and I'll make up the difference then. Full stats in miles and percentage of goal accomplished are below, followed by a chart for those who prefer visuals :)
  • run/walk = 269 / 700 miles (avg 89/mo; 21/wk; 38%)
  • cycling = 163 / 1750 miles (avg 54/mo; 9%)
  • swimming = 5 / 60 miles (8%)
  • tri 2010 challenge = 436 / 2010 (22%)
  • total exercise hours = 110 / 365 hours (avg 1.2 hrs / day; 30%)
  • 101 things = 7/30 done (23%); 11 in progress (details in separate post later)
  • maintain weight around 125 lbs = spiked above 125 the last 2 weeks, but still mostly within "maintenance" range of give or take 2-3 lbs and I'm back to 124 lbs today.

March Accomplishments
  • Winter Park Road Race - 8.2 miles Distance Dare - New 10K and 2 miler PR!
  • Recruited 33 people for our Corporate 5K team at work (including a few friends and family)
  • Began swimming again
  • Began biking to work again

0 to Marathon in 2 years!

Looking back through my logs and reflecting on my journey so far (oh no, it's far from over!), I realized that I basically went from 0 to marathon in just under 2 years. This blows my mind. I never thought I could do this.

I started my journey to a better me in February 2008. I walked my first 2 mile race at the end of March, and started running with the Couch to 5k program during the first week in April. I've had some ups and downs, but I've not stop running yet and hope I never do : ) In the past 2 years, I've run over 30 races including countless 5Ks, 2 5 milers, 3 10Ks, 1 15k, 3 half marathons, and 1 full marathon.

I've tracked every race and milestone run in a handy spreadsheet, along with my pace, and it's amazing to see how far I've come. Take a look at the link below, and if you ever get frustrated see that it didn't happen over night but that a little patience and perseverance eventually pays off :)

February 2010 Recap

February was a great month with lots of accomplishments and first: first adventure race, first marathon relay, and first marathon! :) March will be a step back as I recover from the marathon and ease into the next phase of training. I'm still deciding if I want to train for an olymic triathlon at the end of the season or just stick with sprints and focus on my running.

February Stats
  • walking = 11 miles
  • running = 63 miles
  • cycling = 14 miles
  • total = 88 miles; 27h 54m (avg 1 hrs / day)
Accomplishments
Click each link for race reports or relevant posts.
Goals for March
  • recover! :)
  • begin swimming again
  • 3/13 - Winter Park Road Race - I want to do at least the 2 miler, since it was my first race ever 2 years ago. I'd love to do the 10k since I've missed it the past 2 years, but may be too soon after the marathon for that. I'll see how I feel on Saturday and decide then.
  • 3/21 - Valencia 5K (maybe)

Fitness Assessment Results

The UCF Faculty and Staff Research and Wellness Center administers fitness assessments for free that measure the following areas: Blood Pressure, Resting Heart Rate, Body Composition, Cardiovascular Fitness, Flexibility, Muscular Endurance, and Muscular Strength. Each test is given a score and rated on a scale from Needs Work, Fair, Fit, or Excellent.

I had my first assessment done on October 13, 2009 and my second one today. The first was after triathlon season ended, and about a month after I began marathon training. During triathlon season, I had a hard time balancing the amount of food I ate with the increased level of activity, and I gained about 15 lbs. After Thanksgiving, I got serious about losing the extra weight.  Now that marathon training is over, I wanted to see how much I've improved in the last four months.  I'm very pleased with the results. Below is a summary of the results compared to those from 4 months ago in October.

Body Fat = 17.8% (Excellent)
This test involves pinching skinfolds in 3 different areas, then the computer does the calculations to give you the body fat percentage. I've lost over 15 lbs since Thanksgiving, but I was curious to see how my body composition changed. The numbers on the scale only tell part of the story. In October, my body fat content was 26.5% placing me in the "Fair" category. I've lost almost 9% body fat, now placing me in the "Excellent" category, so that's a huge improvement. The report I received says that on average, female athletes have a body fat score of 12-22%. Below are the measurements used to determine this.

October Today Difference %
Weight 138 124 -14 -10.1%
Tricep Skinfold 17.5 12.5 -5 -28.6%
Suprailium Skinfold (mid section) 27.5 13 -14.5 -52.7%
Thigh Skinfold 26 19.5 -6.5 -25%

Resting Heart Rate = 54 bpm (Excellent)
It was 60 bpm in October, which was also Excellent. I need to do this in the morning when I wake up to get a more accurate reading, but I keep forgetting. I'm going to try to incorporate that into my morning routine.

Aerobic Fitness = 52.1 ml/kg/min (Excellent)
This test involves stepping up and down on a step at a given cadence for 3-5 minutes while wearing a heart rate monitor. Every minute your heart rate is recorded until it levels out. My score was 37.3 in October, placing me in the "Fit" category. I was at first surprised to see such a big improvement in this area, but then I remembered that I have 5 months of marathon training behind me now. The scale in this category goes up to 55, so I'm truly at the peak of my aerobic fitness.

Sit Reach = 19 cm (Needs Improvement)
This test measures flexibility and as you can see, I am pretty inflexible. This is at the very low end of the "Needs Improvement" scale and only 2 cms better than last time. It surprises me a little that I am not more flexible since I do so much yoga, but this specifically measures hamstrings and lower back flexibility, and I've never been able to touch my toes. I'm going to work on this more and hope to show a significant improvement next time.

Crunches = 29 (Fit)
This test measures the strength of my stomach muscles and how long they can move before getting tired. I basically had to do as many crunches in a row as I could while maintaining a specific cadence. I have been working on strengthening my core, so I was pleased to see that I did 9 more than last time, moving me from the "Fair" category to "Fit." However, I still have lots of room for improvement. The scale goes up to 55.

Push-Ups = 32 (Excellent)
This test measures the strength and endurances of my upper body muscles. Like the previous test, I had to do as many push ups (on my knees) as I could while maintaining the same cadence throughout that I set when I started. I knew I would see an improvement in this category because I completed the 100 push up challenge since the last time. Last time I did 21, which barely put me in the "Excellent" category. This time I exceeded the scale, which only goes up to 31! That's awesome! I've definitely seen better definition in my upper body and I feel stronger than ever.

Total Fitness Score = 77 (Fit)
My total fitness score in October was 62, out of 100, placing me in the "Fit" category. I improved by 15 points since then, but I still have room for improvement -- 80+ is Excellent, so I'm not too far off.

I'm glad I redid this test at this point in my training and weight loss journey. As nice as it is to see the numbers on the scale go down, it's even better to see how my hard work has improved my body and physical abilities. I'm going to continue working on my weak areas and do this again in another 4 months, when I hope to see an Excellent rating across the board.

  2. write a letter to myself to open in 1001
  3. run for 1 hour straight (with no walk breaks)
In Progress
  1. run a marathon - training done; race on 2/28
  2. build a 12 month emergency fund (take home pay) [7.3/12]

    January 2010 Recap

The end of January marks the end of marathon training and the begin of a 4 week taper. I've had a great running season, and I am more than ready to tackle this marathon, then switch my focus to triathlons for a bit. Thankfully, I have 2 races before the marathon to keep me busy and motivated.

I joined the YMCA this month to have someplace to swim, attend exercise classes like kickboxing, and begin incorporating strength training regularly into my workout routine. So far I am loving it -- been to a few classes and done a few machines -- but have yet to make it to the pool.

My running goal for January was to run 100 miles, but a few runs got cut short and that didn't happen. I almost went running yesterday to meet that goal, but realized how foolish it was to risk injury to meet an arbitrary goal -- not to mention that it's 109 when I add in the walking miles. Even at 97 miles, that's 10 more than last month and that's accomplishment enough for me. I also wanted to exercise an average of 1 hour a day (towards my goal of exercising 365 hours in 2010) and I exceeded that. Below are all the details.

    January Stats
    • walking = 12 miles; 3h 23m (I've been walking to the Y, which 1.2 roundtrip)
    • running = 97 miles; 20h 36m (about 1/2 of all exercise hours was running)
    • cycling = 14 miles; 2 hrs (includes trainer and spin class)
    • swimming = 0
    • other = 15hr 27m (includes yoga, core, strength, kickbox, etc)
    • total = 123 miles; 41h 25m (avg 1.3 hrs / day)
    Accomplishments
    Goals for February
PS - The photo of the day will be posted later to the 30 Days - February 2010 Flickr Set. I won't always post them to the blog too, so check there if you wan't to keep up with them daily.

Marathon Training Update = 10 Miles Solo!

This has been a great week of running milestones. On Tuesday and Thursday, I ran 5 miles without any walk breaks in just over 1 hour. This morning, I ran 10 miles by myself -- the most I had ever run without a group was 7 miles. I feel great knowing that I could easily train for a future half marathon on my own now.

After this morning's run, I've run 20 miles this week, which is a lot for a week when I don't have a really long run. I've run 79 miles in December so far, the most ever, and still have 2 more runs before the end of the year. I hope to finish the year with at least 555 miles. I'll write a year in review post next week after I've done all my runs for the year, which will include 2009 stats, graphs, and goals for 2010.

In the meantime, you can read the full details of each of these milestone runs at dailymile:

    July in Review

July was a great month. I managed to up my run millage a little bit. I was on track to run more than 40 miles, but then I hurt my foot and have not been able to run much (1-2 miles at a time) for the past 2 weeks. My cycling has been hindered a bit due to Florida fall weather, but I am finally getting back to commuting to work.

My swimming has exploded! I swam 13 times in July, compared to 5 in June, and almost 3 times the distance! I am getting more confident in the water, and I always look forward to my swim workouts. I'm swimming 3-4 times a week now, and loving every minute of it. After completing a sub-sprint tri, and conquering my fear of the open water at Lucky's Lake, I finally signed up for my first full sprint triathlon. I am already hooked :)

    My Evolution as a Runner

When new runners tell me they are having trouble running long enough or far enough, I often advice them to slow down and focus on covering the distance, and that the speed will come with time. I am sure they compare my current 11-12 min/mile pace to their 14-15 min/mile pace and think, "yeah that's because you are much faster than me," even though I am still slow compared to more experience runners. I assure them I started just as slow and this improved paced did not happen overnight, but words don't mean much when you are frustrated with your progress. So, now I have proof!

Being the huge geek that I am, I created a spreadsheet charting each and every one of my milestone runs, including all 27 C25K sessions, and every new distance and race PR that led to me completing my first 2 half marathons. This allows you to see how my pace improved over time and how I sometimes had to run slower to run longer before I got faster.

    Notable Observations:
    • It took me longer than 9 weeks to complete C25K and hence run 3.1 without walking
    • I soon returned to run/walking as I trained for the 2 half marathons using the Galloway method.
    • My pace fluctuated a lot, and as I began running longer without walking, it slowed even more as I focused on covering the distance regardless of speed. Once I was comfortable with the distance, I then was able to push myself and improve my speed.
    • I rarely train at racing speed and save most of it for race day. However, I do push myself sometimes and do a few tempos here and there to get my body used to what it feels to run fast.
    • For even more insight into how I progressed and the decisions I made along the way, read my C25K Posts and Race Reports.

    June in Review

As you can see from the stats below, compared to last month, I almost doubled my cycling. This resulted in me running half as much. I guess this makes sense since biking is substantially more prominent in triathlons than running, but I still need to find a better balance between the two. I need to begin building and maintain  a base of at least 1 6-mile long run per week in preparation for when I begin half marathon training in September. I also swam 5 times and I am starting to get more comfortable with swimming. So much so in fact, that I may try a triathlon with a 1/4 mile open water swim next month.

I post all my workouts as they happen at dailymile.com, which means that I hardly update this blog except for race reports. I want to keep this blog active because I think it helps keep me accountable, so I'm going to try posting a summary every month. This will also help me reflect on the previous month and keep track of any challenges I encountered and lessons learned for the following month. Let's see how long this lasts ;)

On the road again ... (10K Training Week 1 Run 1)

      Stitches Removed

I finally got my stitches removed yesterday morning, so I can start running and biking again. Yay! Apparently there are still stitches on the inside that I could tare and those take 60-90 days to dissolve so I need to be careful still and I won't be able to do pushups/crunches/weights for a while.

      Running

I went running when I got home last night. It was not too hot/humid, but I only managed 1.5 miles. We wont talk about how long that took because the important thing is that I got out there and ran after 2+ weeks of being benched. The run felt really awkward, as if I didn't know how to anymore. *lol*

A few things could be the cause for this: 1) I didn't bring my ipod so had nothing to distract me, but it really wasn't that bad to not have music and I didn't even realize it until 1/2 mile into it; 2) I was carrying my new 12oz Amphipod water bottle and because of the lack of music the splashing of the water was driving me crazy--how do you guys deal with that!? I am not crazy about this bottle, but I think I am just not crazy about carrying it. I also got a bit of a side stitch towards the end, but I did it!

This was the official start of training for my 10K in October 12. Today is a rest day and I was going to get up and do an easy mile or two in the morning, since the plan calls for only 3 days of running and I plan to add an extra "no rules" run to the mix, but I decided to do that on Thursday since I want at least 24 hours between runs.

      Nutrition & Weight Loss

I've been steadily losing weight by really trying to eat balanced foods according to My Pyramid Plan. I think this is working remarkably well, and is forcing me to vary my eating. I love it! I fully expected to put on weight during my running hiatus and was just focusing on not gaining, but my focus on healthy eating really paid off and I've lost weight. Below are my full stats, goals from last week and goals for the upcoming week.

      Full Stats:

      -- Meatless/Seafood Meals: 71% of main 3 meals/day (goal 75%)
      -- Home Cooked Meals: 86% of main 3 meals/day (goal 80% -- exceeded)
-- Maintain weight: current weight 127.6 lbs (goal 129-130 -- exceeded)
-- Follow My Pyramid Plan: I did pretty well on this. I exceeded my fruits and veggies allocations but if I am going to eat more of anything it should be fruits and veggies, so I am happy with that. Amazingly, I did not exceed my meat/beans/nuts allocation. I fell short on grains and dairy, but I still had more than I usually do, so that is a win for me.

      Goals for this week:

I decided to set my workout out goals in days instead of miles to simplify things and because is more important to get out there for a run than how many miles I do. I'll still track my millage, but I just want to run this week and get back into the swing of things.

Race Report: ORC Race into Summer 5K

Well, I made it. I ran the whole thing, minus the 2 tiny walk breaks (~ 5 sec ea) I took to drink some water. The race wasn't timed (except for the main clock) so I am grateful for my Garmin watch. According to the watch, I finished in 41:25. Jason, who says he walked most of the last mile, still managed to outrun me by 8 or 9 minutes.

I know that I started too fast, but to me it seemed like I was standing still. I simply could not get my legs to go slower than a 13:00 pace, but I eventually settled into a decent pace and finished mile 1 in 13:45. I sped up a tad to finish mile 2 in 13:19, but mile 3 was rough. My legs were really tired and it was HOT, yet I wasn't really too out of breath yet. I somehow managed to go just a tad faster and finish mile 3 in 13:01. I felt like I had nothing left in me to make my legs go faster, but somehow I muster one last bit of strength and crossed that last .1 mile (.12 by my watch) in 1:21, then promptly collapsed (figuratively speaking) =)

My time was about 30s slower than by best practice run this week, but about 20s faster than my fastest 5K race so far, so I'll take it. Honestly, it is a miracle I did this well after the fall from my bike on Wednesday. My hips, thighs and butt are still sore, and my right knee was bothering me a bit. It didn't really hurt while running, but I didn't want to push it. Not to mention that it was a lot hotter out this morning at 7:30 than during my 2 practice runs this week, which I happened to run at night after a rain storm. So all things considered, this was a great race.

I was exhausted when I finished and felt a bit sick to my stomach. The heat was really getting to me. Because this was a hand scored race, they handed us these cards to fill out at the finish line. Seriously, they should not have anything that requires you to stop moving for at least 1/2 mile after the finish line. I did not want to stop walking, so I shoved it at Jason to fill out for me while I went to get some water. Even though I felt really beat and kinda ill, it really did not take that long for me to recover this time. I just couldn't stop walking.

I was going to run in just my running skirt and sports bra, but it was cool when we left the house so I put on a running shirt. Then I didn't know where I'd put my bib, so I just kept the shirt on. I wish I'd taken it off because it may have helped me keep cooler during the race. This was my 3rd run in the skirt and I am simply not sold on it yet. Even with body glide, I don't like the feeling of my thighs rubbing together. It wasn't bad during the race itself, and I am not chaffed, but it was not really comfortable to walk around in it afterwards. So I think I'll stick to my biking shorts from now on.

The race was very low key. There was no timing chip and the start and finish lines were drawn on the grown with chalk. I almost missed the start line to start my watch. It made the finish very anti-climatic. This was also our first out and back race. We were a tad worried because the path was kind of narrow and it didn't seem like it could accommodate runners on both sides. It turned out fine, as I figured it would.

Oh, I almost forgot. There were news cameras there (damn I wanted to get a picture but was too exhausted after the race to form any coherent thoughts) because a local runner was found dead after running in the park just a few days ago. I saw the camera man running beside me as I started the race, so maybe my cute little skirted behind will be on the news. It was nice of the race organizers to have a moment of silence for her before the race started and remind us to be safe while running.

PS - According to the official race results, my time was 40:17. Not sure how there is over a minute discrepancy, but I'll take it! :)

I did not lose any weight this week, and I may have gained a pound, but I worked out a lot more so I gained muscle and it was also my TOM. I am well on my way to running the 5K on Saturday, so right now I am focusing on exercise and I know the pounds/inches will eventually will come off.

      Fitness Update: no change

I didn't lose any weight this week. I may have put on a pound, but my scale was being temperamental, much like my body because my TOM is here. However, I was very active this week and over achieved all my fitness goals, so I probably also gained some muscle. I bought new running shoes yesterday and some other running gear. I didn't get up early enough this morning, but I plan to run tonight and try to reach that 5k distance. I'll just start really slow so I can cover the distance. I'll work on speed later in the week, but my goal for Sat is to run the whole thing and to hopefully do it in under 42 minutes (I would love to do it in under 40, but I think that may be a bit ambitious since I'll have to start slow to make it. We'll see).

I finally did some strength training this week. Instead of weights, I am just going to focus on my core, so I came up with this routine (mostly based on this article and exercises from the Metabolism Booster segment of 10 Minute Solution - Carb and Calorie Burner).
      1. Push Ups (2 x 10)
      2. Standard Crunches (10)
      3. Bicycle Crunches (10)
      4. Reverse Crunches (10)
      5. Basic Plank (30 sec)
      6. Plank Weight Shift (10)
      7. Plank Knee Drop Crunch (10)
      8. Plank Knee Drop Oblique Crunch (10)
      9. Plank Leg Lifts (10)
      10. Side Plank Dips (10)
      11. Supermans (10)
      12. Heel Touches (10)
I don't do all of these every time, but I hope to work up to that eventually as well as add more reps and a few of the other exercises from that article in a week or 2 once I get comfortable with these. I also want to alternate between these and 10-20 minutes from Quick Fix Cardio Kick.

      Accomplishments for week of 6/1 - 6/7:
      • Ran 2.5 miles & then 2.85 miles without walking
      • Biked: 24+ miles
      • Ran/walked: 12+ miles
      • Core exercises: 3 days
      • 45 Min Yoga for Weight Loss: 2 days
      • Ate out only 3 times: brunch at Sweet Tomatoes on Sunday, dinner at Macaroni Grill on Wednesday, Olive Garden for lunch on Thursday
      Goals for the upcoming week:
      • Run 3.1 miles (5k) without walking
      • Complete my 4th 5k race without walking in under 42 minutes (preferably in under 40)
      • Bike at least 20 miles
      • Run/walk at least 10 miles
      • Core exercises at least 3 days
      • QF Cardio Kick at least 2 days
      • 45m Yoga at least 1 day
      • Eat at least 3 vegetarian meals (meatless monday)
      • Eat out at most 3 times

      Fitness Update (Take 2)

We just went for an 8 mile bike ride (round trip) to Target. It was great! I bought a new sports bra (for biking) and some sunglasses. Now we are off to Disney.

I'm going to start posting my updates on Saturdays/Sundays for the previous week, so they coincide with the calendar week. This will make it easier to post total miles I run/bike straight form the program I use that reads and organizes the data from my GPS watch. Below is an updated list of accomplishments for last week.

      Accomplishments for week of 5/25 - 31:
      - Completed my 3rd 5k
      - Ran 30 minutes--C25k Week 9--without walking (3 times)
      - Ran 2.31 miles without walking
      - Ran/Walked 8.5 miles total
